The famous poet of Victorian era Algernon Charles Swinburne in his book A Study of Shakespeare declared Cymbeline to be "the play of plays. Assessing the play, Swinburne mentioned the following: "Here is depth enough with height enough of tragic beauty and passion, terror and love and pity... and subtlety enough of sweet and bitter truth to attest the passage of the mightiest and wisest scholar or teacher in the school of human spirit."
Cymbeline by William Shakespeare is one of his later plays. Also known as The Tragedie of Cymbeline or Cymbeline, King of Britain, the play was set in the pre-Christian Roman world, Ancient Britain (c. 10–14). It was based on legends that formed part of the body of medieval literature Matter of Britain concerning Cunobeline, the early Celtic British King.
In the First Folio of 1623 it is listed as a tragedy, however modern critics often lean to the view that Cymbeline is a romance or even a comedy. Similarly to Othello and The Winter's Tale, it deals with the eternal themes of innocence and jealousy. While the precise answer on the question ‘when was Cymbeline written’ still doesn’t exist, the play was undeniably produced as early as 1611.
Cymbeline was published in the First Folio from a careful transcript of a theatrical playbook that had included many authorial manuscripts and stage directions. The main theme depicted in Cymbeline is a wager by a husband on his wife’s fidelity, subplot borrowed from a story in Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio. How many acts are in Cymbeline? The comedy consists of five acts and each act includes 2 to 5 scenes.
